Risk of more heavy traffic for Bollington!
Latest! Cheshire East
Council have suspended their plans, due mainly to the public outcry,
and have asked RailTrack to provide more substantial information
showing that there is a problem. This will no doubt take some time
to produce and we await the next steps with interest.
A notice
has been published in the Macclesfield Express (3 March 2010)
informing of Cheshire East Council Area Highways proposal to
apply a 7.5 tonne weight limit to the bridge over the main
railway line by the Legh Arms in Brookledge Lane, Adlington.
This
is very serious for Bollington because it would mean that all
the HGV traffic to and from the industrial areas at Pott Shrigley,
in Nab Quarry and at Bakestonedale Road, would have to come
through Bollington. Several planning applications for the Pott
Shrigley industrial activities have only been supported by
Bollington Town Council on the agreement that their heavy traffic
would take the short route to the main road at Adlington to
avoid the need to come through Bollington.
We,
as a town and as individuals, should oppose this restriction
tooth and nail. There are various activities that could be
undertaken:
- We
should ask for a traffic survey to determine the number and
size of vehicles that will be diverted through Bollington.
- If
the restriction is really needed, we should demand that it
be temporary while the bridge is repaired or strengthened.
And by temporary I mean the immediate commissioning of the
necessary works - not temporary as in some time never.
- A petition
has been organised opposing this proposal and everyone should
sign it.
- Everyone
should write with their objections - address below.
I
know that Bollington Town Council take a serious view
of this and are lobbying the relevant councillors, including
those responsible for the Adlington area.
